How To Make A Moss Pole

A lot of house plants like to “climb” up a moss pole. Although you can purchase them, you can easily make one yourself that is much better! Luckily one of our amazing moderators, Ingibjörg Andrea Bergþórsdóttir, over in our Facebook Group wrote a guide explaining how this is done. She even included pictures to show the process.

Hi there!

I spent my morning repotting plants and making moss poles. I thought some of you might find my method of moss-pole-making interesting, so here it is!

Info:

Moss poles are great for plants that like to climb + have aerial roots that love to grab onto things. Examples are Monsteras, Philodendrons, Rhaphidophora, Pothos and more.

Materials:

Wire net with about 1 cm spacing
Good wire-clippers
The tiniest zip-ties one can find
Sphagnum moss

Method:

Wet the moss and allow it to expand
Cut the wire net into an appropriate size, here I had to add onto mine because my net wasn't tall enough. Make sure it fits the size of the plant + the depth of the pot you use
Close up the net using zip ties whilst filling it up with moss. Make sure you don't use too much moss because we want the aerial roots to have space to burrow into it and grow
Leave out a gap at the bottom - this will the potted end
Repot the plant along with your new mosspole. Make sure the soil mixture you use fills up the void in the pole - that way it gets super stable in the pot
Pour yourself a steaming cup of coffee and enjoy your masterpiece

I hope you find this interesting and I'd love to see your methods of making moss poles!
